We are jumping headfirst into our Fall Fashion season in the Greater Washington region. As many have anticipated, Washington, DC and its surrounding areas are making a splash in the fashion world; becoming quite the fashion capital of its own. Emerging Fashion leaders are paving the way with more opportunities for designers, models and creative business owners alike. Designer and creative director, Ifeoma C. Onyia, recently launched DMV Fashion Week this month with a 4-day event throughout the city. Opening night took place at on Thursday, August 8th, at Macy’s, Tyson’s Corner. The following evening, an industry mixer, sponsored by Courvoisier, was held in the Laurel studio of Clyopatra Couture. On Saturday August 10, the Junior Designers and Heritage Designer Runway show took place at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery. The biggest night of the week was the Atelier Fashion Runway at the African Union DC Embassy on Sunday, August 11th.
DMV Fashion Week joins the ranks of several other multi-day fashion events in the area. The brand may be the new kid on the block though its contributors have a longstanding fashion history in the area. Ifeoma, founder of DMV Fashion Week, made her name in the industry with her clothing line Clyopatra Couture. Born in Nigeria, educated in London, and now residing in Maryland, Ifeoma fuses her three homes into her work. She began her fashion career in London, UK where she launched her bridal line. Soon after she started the first Afrocentric Bridal Exhibition winning the Keeper of Heritage award by Essence Magazine. In more recent years as a designer, Ifeoma showcases her clothing line during her popular annual runway show Midnight Summer Madness.
DMV Fashion Week came by surprise to many making waves in the DMV area. However, Ifeoma’s purpose is clear. She is providing a platform for her community. There are never too many opportunities for creative professionals that often struggle to survive. She is positive in her mission and sincere in her commitment. She is joined by a team of talented individuals who too share her passion for creation. One such team member is makeup artist and creative director Karen Bonita, who too have the experience, wisdom, and wit necessary to build a longstanding brand in the city. The team looks forward to next year making DMV Fashion Week a prominent annual event.
