The Cherry Blossom festival is one of our nation’s most cherished springtime celebrations. From ceremonies, concerts, parades, parties and workshops, the spring is a great time to absorb the splendor of the Nation’s Capital. The Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the gift of 3,000 Japanese flowering cherry trees by Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to America in 1912. The festival signifies a continued friendship between the two countries. The recognition began with school children reenacting the initial planting of the cherry trees by First Lady Taft on the Tidal Basin. Over a hundred years later, this celebration has grown into a 4-week celebration drawing millions of spectators. One of the most popular events is the televised Cherry Blossom Parade which is an amazing combination of bright colors, excitement, and talented youth from across the country.
